Early in 2020, a few Nigerian immigrants were detained for entering Indonesia without the proper paperwork. Many had gone to Indonesia in the hopes of eventually sailing by boat to Australia.
Years have passed while thousands of refugees in Indonesia wait to be resettled. It’s uncertain what lies ahead for them.
According to UNHCR Indonesia, about 12,000 people, the majority of them are from Afghanistan, are recognized as refugees under Indonesian law, having come from 40 different countries.
