Just a few days after Dickson Ndiema, her boyfriend, is suspected of setting Rebecca Cheptegei on fire, the Ugandan athlete came to her death.
Kenyan-born Cheptegei had competed for Uganda in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, placing 44th in the women’s marathon.
According to the authorities, the unfortunate event happened on Sunday at her house in Nairobi’s Western Trans Nzoia County.
Cheptegei suffered severe burns over 75% of her body after Ndiema is said to have doused her in gasoline and set her ablaze during a domestic argument between the pair. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
Ndiema was receiving specialist care at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret after suffering burn injuries as well.
It’s thought that Cheptegei’s parents’ argument over who owned the land set off the attack.
