Borno South senator Mohammed Ali Ndume has voiced his displeasure with Nigeria’s pervasive corruption in the National Assembly.
Speaking on Sunday during a media conference in Kano, Ndume bemoaned the fact that politicians who commit larceny are frequently applauded rather than held accountable, which contributes to the country’s ongoing corruption. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
“Corruption is the main issue facing this nation. There is currently no legislation that addresses the problem of corruption in the nation either proactively or reactively. Someone is fortunate to be God-fearing if they are in our system, particularly in politics or the administration, and they are not corrupt. If not, Ndume said, “The only place where you can steal money, walk around freely, and get celebrated is Nigeria.”
The senator went on to emphasize how people who obtain wealth through illegal means are frequently held in high regard in their communities.
People would lobby you and bow down before you if you entered a place like this, even if they knew the money was stolen.
“This country is the only place where someone can be poor yesterday or last week and the next week buy ten cars and buy jets and his brothers and mother and uncle would fly with him and they would say Allah has blessed our son,” the man said.
The senator also mentioned his previous, fruitless attempts to create laws aimed at explaining the country’s hidden wealth. He disclosed that an executive measure aimed at resolving the matter was turned down by a previous head of state.
“As of right now, Nigeria has neither an Executive Order nor a law pertaining to unexplained wealth,” Ndume stated.
In addition to his concerns about corruption, Ndume voiced worries over the issue of hunger in Nigeria. He urged the government and citizens to take advantage of the country’s vast arable land to cultivate more food crops.
“There is hunger in the land and up till now we have not cultivated up to five per cent of our land, Nigeria is blessed with massive arable land,” the senator concluded.
