A shocking case of child abuse has emerged from Owerri, Imo State, where a 35-year-old businesswoman, Edith Nwachukwu, was arrested for savagely battering her 13-year-old househelp, Kelechi Ejieke. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at the popular Relief Market in Owerri, where police operatives from the Owerri Urban Divisional Headquarters rescued the severely injured minor after concerned traders raised the alarm.
According to reports, Edith accused the young girl of stealing her money and unleashed brutal physical violence on her. Witnesses claimed she was on the verge of buying additional canes to continue the assault when traders intervened.
Chidiebube Okeoma, a renowned journalist and founder of the Stand for Humanity Foundation, was instrumental in alerting the authorities. “When I got the information, I immediately contacted the DPO. Thanks to the brave traders who rescued the minor and brought in the police,” Okeoma shared.
The victim, a native of Amaeke Adam in Abia State, was rushed to a hospital for treatment due to the severity of her injuries. At the police station, Edith admitted to battering the girl out of anger, claiming the child had stolen her money—an accusation the victim denied.
Okeoma expressed his outrage, stating, “This incident highlights the urgent need to protect vulnerable children. Our foundation is committed to ensuring justice is served, and we will not relent until such acts are eradicated.”
The Imo State Police Command spokesperson, SP Henry Okoye, confirmed the arrest and stated that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has zero tolerance for child abuse. Investigations into the case are ongoing, and the command has vowed to ensure justice is served.
