In a significant move, drivers affiliated with ride-hailing platforms such as Bolt, Uber, inDrive, and Rida are set to suspend operations in Lagos on May 1, 2025. The protest, organized by the Lagos State chapter of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), aims to highlight grievances over poor working conditions and alleged anti-labour practices by these companies. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
The planned 24-hour strike coincides with International Workers’ Day, underscoring the drivers’ call for fair compensation, safer working environments, and respect for their rights. AUATON’s Public Relations Officer, Steven Iwindoye, stated that members would log off the apps and cease accepting rides during the protest period .
Key Issues Highlighted by the Union:
Inadequate Compensation: Drivers report that fare reductions, including a recent 50% cut by Bolt, have significantly diminished their earnings, making it challenging to sustain their livelihoods
Unjust Deactivations: There are concerns over sudden and unexplained account deactivations, leaving drivers without income or recourse.
Safety Concerns: The lack of proper rider identification and mandatory facial recognition systems has raised safety issues for drivers.
High Commission Fees: Drivers are burdened by excessive commission charges from the platforms, further reducing their take-home pay.
Lack of Dialogue: The union alleges that ride-hailing companies have consistently ignored their concerns and failed to engage in meaningful discussions to address these issues .
AUATON has called on all app-based drivers in Lagos, regardless of union affiliation, to participate in the protest. The union emphasizes that collective action is necessary to bring about meaningful change in the ride-hailing industry.
As the protest approaches, commuters in Lagos are advised to plan accordingly, as the strike is expected to disrupt ride-hailing services across the city.
