In order to reduce perishable food wastages in the state, the Lagos State Government has announced plans to adopt the usage of produce vehicle and crates in markets across the State.
While speaking on the new initiative, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Eyes Of Lagos reporter revealed that, Toyin Suarau during a stakeholders meeting at Ikeja, said the produce vehicle and crate project is targeted towards ensuring perishable foods are packaged, transported and delivered to customers in a wholesome and hygienic condition which befits a mega city like Lagos.
Suarau, who was represented at the meeting by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Shakirudeen Olayiwola Onasanya stated that the need to implement the initiative will help in reducing wastages.
According to the Commissioner, “over 40 percent of these goods get spoilt before getting to its final destination as a result of bad packaging. As a government, we cannot fold our hands and allow these trend to persist.”
He further explained that an improved transportation system will be put in place to ensure that the perishable foods gets to its final destination in good time as it will reduce wastage and risk of getting food contaminated
