In the final hours before the Edo State governorship race, the Accord Party had to choose whether to nominate Dr. Bright Enabulele as a replacement for Kennedy Iyere, who had resigned due to conflicts over his candidacy.
The party’s hierarchy says they are not deterred by Iyere’s sudden resignation and that Enabulele has what it takes to win the next gubernatorial contest. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
In a widely disseminated news article, Iyere gave as his reason for resigning the party internal party disagreements, including a suspected Enabulele conspiracy.
The party’s Edo State Chairman, Hon. Joseph Omoregbe, flanked by candidate Dr. Bright Enabulele and other party members, spoke to reporters on Friday and claimed that the candidate’s withdrawal demonstrated that “Iyere had no intention to contest the governorship election right from onset.”
The party released a statement saying, “The leadership of Accord Party, both at the national and state levels, wishes to bring attention to the withdrawal of Mr. Kennedy Iyere, who until a few hours ago was the flag bearer of Accord in the Edo 2024 gubernatorial election which holds this Saturday, September 21, 2024. Our teeming supporters and the good people of Edo State.”
“The party is not surprised by his withdrawal because it was obvious following the February 17, 2024, Party primaries that he had no intention of running for office.” Dr. Bright Enabulele will be his running companion in the 2024 election.
“The public would note that since he emerged as the Party’s Candidate, Iyere has not printed, pasted, or participated in any campaign activities.”
In addition, he said that Iyere was working against the party since his goal was to transact under the Party’s name and profit for himself.
Despite his assertions that he want to serve at the federal level, it should be noted that his departure was voluntary.
“We hereby reassure the wonderful people of Edo State that Accord is very much in the race as Dr. Bright Enabulele, our running mate, who is really more capable than Kennedy Iyere, immediately assumes the role of candidate.
“Iyere had to withdraw after realizing that his strategy to ride on the back of Dr. Enabulele—who is more financially capable for the race—was not going to succeed.
“We hereby call on all of our devoted followers and members throughout the state to utilize their right and power to vote tomorrow.”
