Finally, the Federal Government has approved a 133% increase in the monthly allowance of NYSC participants, which would go from N33,000 to N77,000 beginning in July 2024.
This is in response to the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024, which was passed with the intention of enhancing worker welfare in Nigeria. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
A letter dated September 25, 2024, and signed by Chairman Ekpo Nta of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission conveyed the permission.
During a visit to the Commission, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, the Director-General, had pushed for a comprehensive welfare package for corps members, according to Caroline Embu, Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, NYSC.
Embu acknowledged the clearance in a statement made public on Wednesday night, expressing gratitude to the federal government for the prompt action.
According to her, the increased stipend is intended to encourage and uplift NYSC members’ spirits so they may make more meaningful contributions to the country’s growth.
“The increase in the monthly allowance of Corps Members to Seventy-Seven Thousand Naira (N77,000) with effect from July 2024 has been approved by the Federal Government,” Embu stated. This is consistent with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act of 2024 being enacted.
“Before this, the Chairman had received a visit from the Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, who advocated for a comprehensive welfare package for Corps Members.
“The NYSC Chief is appreciative of the Federal Government’s prompt action and hopeful that it will not only provide much-needed support to the Corps Members but also raise their spirits and inspire them to achieve even more,”
“The monthly allowance for Corps Members was thirty-three thousand Naira (N33,000) prior to this increase.
