Makinde is warned by INEC ahead of the Ondo Polls

Governor of Oyo State, Mr. Seyi Makinde, has received a warning from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) telling him not to make repeated, baseless accusations while campaigning.
A fair and credible electoral atmosphere is crucial, and INEC urged all political leaders to have responsible conversations. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

In a statement published on its X handle, INEC said that it has noted a charge made by Governor Makinde at a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign event that was conducted in Akure on Tuesday.

Governor Makinde demanded during this rally that Mrs. Toyin Babalola, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ondo State, be removed. According to Governor Makinde, her appointment should be reevaluated only because “she is from Ondo State.”

In response to this claim, INEC reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the Nigerian election process and emphasized the significance of basing such assertions on verifiable evidence rather than erroneous assumptions.
The electoral umpire stated that Gov. Makinde had made a comparable accusation in 2020 before to the most recent governorship election in the state.

The statement reads; “Our attention has been drawn to an allegation made by the Governor of Oyo State, Mr. Seyi Makinde at his party’s campaign rally held today in Akure in which he called on the INEC Chairman to remove the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ondo State, Mrs. Toyin Babalola, because ‘she is from Ondo State’.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Mrs. Babalola is not from Ondo State in line with the Commission’s policy not to deploy a REC to his or her State of origin. In 2020, ahead of the last Governorship election in the same State, he accused a senior official of the Commission of working with the Vice Chancellor of a federal university to undermine the election. The allegation was untrue.
“We appeal to holders of high public office such as Governor Makinde to verify their information before making these serial, unfounded allegations”.
