In a twist straight out of a low-budget thriller, a man’s attempt to make quick cash ended in public embarrassment after he unknowingly walked into a trap of his own making—trying to sell a stolen phone at the very shop where its rightful owner had earlier lodged a complaint.
The drama, which played out in real time and was later shared on X (formerly Twitter), has since gone viral, with netizens adding their two cents—and memes. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
Caught in 4K (Literally)
According to the viral post, the man strolled into a phone store hoping to flip the device for ₦300,000. But fate had other plans. Unknown to him, the phone’s original owner had visited the same store just days earlier, detailing the theft and dropping enough information to alert the shop owner should the device reappear.
It did. And so did the drama.
As soon as the shopkeeper recognized the phone, the man’s story started to fall apart faster than a Jollof pot without seasoning. A video of the encounter shows a small crowd gathering as the accused tries to explain how he “found” the phone, claiming it had been left behind at a bar where he worked. But the internet wasn’t buying it.

The Bigger Picture
While this might seem like just another comic-relief episode for social media, it also sheds light on how digital awareness is empowering citizens to take action. It’s a reminder to always report stolen devices with details, especially in public marketplaces.
The video might have ended without a police presence, but the suspect didn’t escape the court of public opinion.
