“If You’re Humble as an Artist, They Take You for Granted” – Asake Opens Up on Ego in the Music Industry

Nigerian hitmaker Asake has sparked fresh conversation online after sharing his candid thoughts on humility, ego, and how artists are perceived in the music industry. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Asake: Humility Is Often Misunderstood

Speaking in a recent interview, the “Lonely at the Top” crooner explained that humility, though often praised, is sometimes seen as weakness in the entertainment scene.

According to him, fans and audiences tend to value artists with an aura of ego and exclusivity more than those who appear too accessible.

“As an artist, if you’re humble, they take you for granted. But if you have ego, they feel like you’re not accessible — then they like you more. People would rather see what you’re doing than showing them. They don’t really appreciate the process. Do what you need to do and just go,” Asake said.

The singer stressed that it’s better to let results speak louder than words, as audiences are more impressed by achievements than behind-the-scenes explanations.

Fans React: “Humility Is a Trap”

As expected, Nigerians had plenty to say about Asake’s bold statement. Reactions ranged from agreement to lighthearted banter:

  • @Igbeauxx: “I keep saying this, humility is a trap. People want you humble just to keep access to you. Don’t fall for it.”

  • @Kaygoldhim: “Wizkid told him sometimes ago… ‘Ma humble oooh’ 😭.”

  • @AlphaMike001: “Bruh isn’t even capping. Use Davido as an example.”

  • @StatsByGreyson: “This logic isn’t just for music. In life, you need boundaries. When it’s business, it’s business. When it’s fun, it’s fun. No go hug person when you suppose give handshake.”

The Larger Conversation: Ego, Branding, and Music Stardom

Asake’s comments have reignited a debate about the thin line between humility and ego in the Afrobeats industry, where branding and perception often matter just as much as talent.

For many fans, his words reflect the reality that success sometimes requires maintaining boundaries and protecting one’s image.
