Following the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared seven days of national mourning beginning Sunday.

In an official condolence statement released through his media team, Tinubu described Buhari as a “towering figure in Nigerian history”, noting his contributions to nation-building as both military leader and civilian president. Eyes Of Lagos reports,


🏳️ Flags at Half-Mast Nationwide

President Tinubu ordered that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country from Sunday, July 13, 2025.

“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today,” Tinubu stated.

🏛️ Emergency FEC Meeting & State Funeral

An emergency Federal Executive Council (FEC) session will hold on Tuesday, dedicated entirely to honouring the legacy of Buhari.

Tinubu also confirmed that the Federal Government will grant Buhari a full state funeral, describing it as a befitting tribute to the late president’s decades of service to the nation.

“The federal government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country,” the statement continued

🇳🇬 Final Resting Place: Daura, Katsina State

Buhari will be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, in Katsina State, on Monday, July 14. Preparations are underway for a burial attended by top dignitaries, world leaders, and family members.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has been assigned to London to coordinate and accompany Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria.

The death of Muhammadu Buhari was first announced by his former aides, Garba Shehu and Bashir Ahmad, via separate statements on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Buhari’s passing marks the end of a significant era in Nigerian politics — one defined by firm leadership, complex legacy, and a lifetime of public service.
