A Sudden, Tragic Turn
On Wednesday, July 2nd, what began as a normal household routine ended in heartbreak when a family pit bull turned violent. Blakely’s mother had momentarily bent down to pick up laundry when the dog suddenly lunged at the baby.
Despite her desperate efforts to pry the dog’s jaws open and simultaneously call for help, the toddler was fatally attacked. Authorities confirmed that Blakely suffered devastating bite wounds to her face and throat, and passed away almost instantly.
A Mother’s Helpless Battle
Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis L. Campbell praised the mother’s bravery, stating:
“Her mother clearly put up a fight — she had defensive wounds trying to get the dog’s jaws open… I can’t imagine a worse nightmare.”
By the time she reached 911 dispatchers, the unimaginable had already occurred.
The Dog Had Shown Past Aggression
Although the dog had no history of attacking humans, it had previously displayed aggression toward other dogs. The toddler’s father, who was not home at the time of the incident, later made the difficult decision to put the animal down.
A Family Shattered
In a tearful obituary, Blakely’s family remembered her as a light in their lives:
“Her joyful essence shone brightest when she was playing with her brother. Their bond was pure and filled with laughter… moments that will forever live in our hearts.”
