Portable Alleges Nnamdi Kanu Was Offered ₦50bn Before Sentencing
Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has stirred public debate after alleging that detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, was offered ₦50 billion prior to his recent sentencing. The claim surfaced in a video circulating on social media, where the artiste also mentioned Yoruba activist Sunday Igboho in the same allegation. Eyes of Lagos reports,
Portable claimed that both Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho were approached with the alleged offer. According to him, Kanu rejected it while Igboho accepted. The singer provided no evidence, and the allegation has not been independently verified, but the comments have fuelled heated discussions online amid ongoing security and political tensions.
Nnamdi Kanu was recently sentenced to life imprisonment after a Federal High Court in Abuja found him guilty on seven counts related to terrorism. The court also issued additional prison terms of 20 years and five years on other charges, all to run concurrently. Kanu has been in detention since his arrest in 2021, facing a series of terrorism-related trials.
In a major development following the sentencing, the IPOB leader was moved from the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja to a correctional centre in Sokoto State. His lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the transfer in a post on social media, noting that it occurred shortly after the judgment was delivered.
Before the verdict, his lawyer Ejimakor and his brother Emmanuel were arrested during a protest demanding Kanu’s release. The demonstration was led by human-rights activist Omoyele Sowore, who was also apprehended and later released. Sowore was rearrested shortly afterwards over a separate comment in which he referred to the Inspector General of Police as a “goat.”
The developments surrounding Nnamdi Kanu’s case, combined with Portable’s new allegations, have further intensified public interest and political reactions. Many Nigerians continue to monitor the situation, with legal and activist groups calling for transparency regarding Kanu’s treatment, trial proceedings, and the circumstances surrounding his transfer.
