Tinubu Expresses Sympathy After Anthony Joshua Injured in Fatal Ogun Road Crash
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sympathy to world heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua following a tragic road accident in Ogun State, Nigeria, that killed two people and left the British-Nigerian athlete with minor injuries. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
Joshua was involved in a crash on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday, December 29, 2025, when the Lexus SUV he was travelling in collided with a stationary truck along the busy Makun stretch of the highway.
According to statements from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), excessive speed and wrongful overtaking were likely contributors to the accident. Five adult males were involved in the crash, with two occupants tragically dying at the scene, while others were injured. Joshua, who was seated in the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and was quickly rescued by security personnel attached to his convoy before being taken to a hospital for treatment.
In a message shared on his official channels, President Tinubu offered condolences to Joshua, the families of the deceased, and all affected by the accident. He described the development as a “tragic loss” and praised Joshua’s contributions to sport and his representation of Nigeria on the global stage, urging national unity and support during this difficult period.
Tinubu also spoke directly with Joshua and his family, calling to convey his personal condolences and prayers for strength, wisdom, and recovery. He highlighted Joshua’s courage, discipline, and role as a source of national pride, while praying for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives.
Meanwhile, the Ogun and Lagos State Governments confirmed that medical teams have been assembled to monitor Joshua’s condition. Authorities are continuing investigations into the precise causes of the crash, and have appealed to motorists to adhere strictly to traffic safety regulations, especially during high-traffic periods.
The tragic accident has drawn widespread attention nationally and internationally, with many wishing the former two-time unified world heavyweight champion a swift recovery and mourning the loss of lives in the incident.
