Nigeria, Türkiye Agree on $5bn Trade Pathway — Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that Nigeria and Türkiye have agreed on a clear framework to grow bilateral trade between both countries to five billion dollars.

The President disclosed this on Tuesday via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, while providing an update on his ongoing State Visit to Ankara, Türkiye. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

According to Tinubu, discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan centred on deepening bilateral relations and delivering tangible economic benefits for citizens of both nations.

He said both countries resolved to fast-track cooperation in key sectors such as trade, energy and defence, with the aim of boosting job creation, investments and shared prosperity.

“President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and I reaffirmed our shared ambition, which speaks directly to jobs, investment and opportunity for our people,” Tinubu said.

The President stated that both leaders agreed on the need to expand trade volumes by removing structural barriers that have limited business growth between Nigeria and Türkiye.

“We are creating a clear pathway to a five-billion-dollar trade volume between Nigeria and Türkiye,” Tinubu declared.

He described the engagements as practical and forward-looking, driven by mutual interests as well as regional and global responsibilities.

“Our conversations were practical and forward-looking: trade and investment, energy, education, defence cooperation, peace and security,” he added.

Tinubu announced the establishment of a Joint Economy and Trade Committee, which he said would drive the implementation of agreements reached and attract fresh investments into both economies.

“The creation of a Joint Economy and Trade Committee will unlock new flows of capital,” the President noted.

He explained that the committee would also support industrial growth, technology transfer, and stronger private sector participation.

The President welcomed Erdoğan’s acknowledgement of Nigeria’s ongoing reforms, particularly in the energy and investment sectors, noting that it reflected growing international confidence in the country.

“I welcome President Erdoğan’s recognition of Nigeria’s reform momentum, particularly in the energy sector,” Tinubu said.

He added that the renewed confidence underscored Nigeria’s commitment to transparency, stability and sustainable economic growth.

“We are determined to build an economy that works for everyone, including the most vulnerable,” he stated.

On regional security, Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s role in promoting peace and stability across Africa, noting that Türkiye’s experience in counter-terrorism and defence cooperation would strengthen collective responses to security threats.

“Türkiye’s experience and readiness to cooperate in training, intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism strengthen our resolve,” he said.

Tinubu further disclosed that nine bilateral agreements were exchanged at the conclusion of the meetings between both leaders.

The agreements cover areas including defence, education, media cooperation, diaspora policy, trade facilitation, social development, and institutional collaboration.

The President reiterated Nigeria’s openness to serious international partnerships and investments.

“Nigeria remains open for serious partnership — open to trade without barriers, ideas, skills and investment that create value and shared prosperity,” Tinubu said.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to inclusive growth, peaceful coexistence and active global engagement.

“We are building an inclusive economy. We are strengthening peace. Nigeria will continue to engage the world with confidence and clarity,” the President concluded.
