Family Speaks on Murder of Nigerian Student in South Africa: ‘He Was Due to Graduate Next Month’

The family of 22-year-old Nigerian student and e-hailing driver, Isaac David Satlat, has broken its silence following his killing in Pretoria West, South Africa, describing the incident as a devastating tragedy and appealing for urgent assistance to repatriate his remains to Nigeria for burial.

Satlat, who was studying mobile engineering and was reportedly scheduled to graduate next month, was murdered on February 11 after picking up passengers who requested a ride through an e-hailing platform. His vehicle was later discovered hijacked, while his body was found the same day in Atteridgeville. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Speaking to journalists, the victim’s uncle and family spokesperson, Otila Onoja, said the loss has plunged the family into deep grief.

“He was supposed to graduate next month — his life and dreams were all cut short,” Onoja said. “We need urgent help to bring his body home so he can be laid to rest in his hometown. This is very heartbreaking for us.”

The incident has heightened concerns about the safety of Nigerians living and working abroad, particularly students who combine their studies with gig-economy jobs in environments considered high risk.

South African authorities have confirmed the arrest of a woman in connection with the killing. She is expected to appear in court on charges including murder and hijacking. Police also indicated that further arrests may follow as investigations continue.

The development has sparked outrage among Nigerians both within the country and in the diaspora, with many calling for justice for the deceased and improved protection measures for Nigerian citizens working overseas.
