UNILAG First-Class Graduate with Sickle Cell Dies One Year After Academic Achievement

Many Nigerians on social media have expressed deep sadness following the death of Anisa Ishaq-Balogun, a first-class graduate who inspired many with her determination despite living with sickle cell disorder.

Her passing has triggered an outpouring of tributes from friends, colleagues, and admirers who remembered her as a resilient and inspiring young woman. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Anisa had become a symbol of hope for many people living with Sickle Cell Disease, proving through her academic success that the condition does not define a person’s potential or future.

Before her death, Anisa graduated with a first-class degree from the University of Lagos, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Cell Biology and Genetics.

She finished with an impressive 4.82 GPA out of 5.00, a remarkable academic achievement that earned her admiration across academic and social circles.

In a celebratory post shared earlier, she proudly highlighted her accomplishment while encouraging others living with health challenges.

“Can we skip to the good part?.. B.Sc. Cell Biology and Genetics (4.82/5.00). Who says having sickle cell disease is a barrier to academic excellence? Definitely not me!”

Her words became a source of motivation for many students facing similar medical struggles.

One individual who had interviewed Anisa two years ago expressed shock after hearing the news of her passing.

The interview reportedly took place during a gathering of first-class graduates organised by chess master Tunde Onakoya at the University of Lagos.

Reacting to the news, the mourner wrote:

“Woke up to the news that Anissa passed away yesterday. I interviewed this SS warrior two years ago at the event Tunde organised with first class graduates at UNILAG. Seeing so many people talk about her in the comments now… man, it’s real

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria confirmed the news of her death in an official statement.

The group prayed for Allah’s mercy upon her and asked that strength be granted to her family and loved ones during the difficult time.

Part of the statement read:

“In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.
With heavy hearts and complete submission to the will of Allah, we announce the passing of our dear sister, Anisa Ishaq-Balogun, who returned to her Lord during this blessed month of Ramadan.”

According to the announcement, her Janazah prayer and burial were scheduled for Thursday morning at Agege Cemetery.

Friends and members of the community have continued to share prayers and tributes online, remembering her as a courageous young woman whose life story inspired countless people.
