2027: PDP in Talks with Peter Obi, Goodluck Jonathan Over Presidential Comeback — Senator Moro
Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has revealed that discussions are ongoing to bring Peter Obi and former President Goodluck Jonathan back to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, August 26, Moro disclosed that key party figures have approached both leaders as part of the PDP’s strategy to reclaim power in 2027.
“So, in the run-up to 2027, I am aware certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi: ‘Hey, come back home, this is what we are likely to do, and if you come, you stand a chance of being the candidate,’” Moro stated.
When asked about Jonathan’s potential return, Moro added:
“Some persons are talking to the former president to come and run. It is a possibility.”
Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria’s president from 2011 to 2015, became the first incumbent to lose re-election after being defeated by Muhammadu Buhari. Since then, he has remained largely inactive in PDP politics despite persistent calls for his comeback.
Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor, served as the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019 before defecting to the Labour Party, where his 2023 presidential campaign galvanized massive youth support, finishing third behind Bola Tinubu (APC) and Atiku Abubakar (PDP).
With the 2027 polls drawing closer, Obi has been collaborating with key opposition figures under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition and has signaled his intention to run again, though his platform remains uncertain.
