Man Graduates from University of Jos After 21 Years, Earns Degree in Special Education
A Nigerian man, Haruna Aminu Ali, has made headlines after finally graduating from the University of Jos (UNIJOS) — 21 years after he began his academic journey. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
Haruna, who enrolled in 2005, graduated in 2021 with a Third Class degree in Special Education for the Hearing Handicapped, under the university’s Faculty of Education.
Despite experiencing significant academic delays, Haruna remained determined to earn his degree, and his story has become a talking point online, where opinions are sharply divided.
A photo accompanying the announcement shows Haruna beaming with pride as he holds his certificate, accompanied by a well-wisher celebrating the milestone.
While many applauded his perseverance, others questioned the value of spending two decades at the university.
Social Media Reactions:
Bishop Fellarry commented: “If he had known, serve oga in main market or building materials for 5-7yrs, he would have been a big man by now, wasting a whole 21 yrs for nothing. Ike gwuru.”
Igodo Christian praised the effort, writing: “Congratulations. I am so proud of you. You started and completed a project.”
Bright Lucky asked humorously: “So he was actually paying school fees for these 21 years?”
Emmanuel Don Tee added: “Na waa.. Those days in school, whoever stays above 1st degree graduation year is mocked as a PROFESSIONAL STUDENT.”
While reactions vary, one thing remains clear: Haruna’s dedication, no matter how long it took, is a testament to resilience in the face of academic and institutional challenges.
📌 Editor’s Note:
Many Nigerian students face extended academic timelines due to factors like strikes, financial hardship, and personal circumstances. Haruna’s story, though unusual, is not entirely uncommon in the Nigerian education system.
