Shock Move: President Tinubu Renames UNIMAID After Late Ex-President Muhammadu Buhari

In a move that has stirred mixed reactions across the country, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) to Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of the late former president. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The announcement was made during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) session of tributes for the late President Buhari. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed the development in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“President Tinubu renames University of Maiduguri as MUHAMMADU Buhari University.”

🇳🇬 Buhari’s Legacy Cemented in Borno?

The decision to rename one of Nigeria’s most prominent northern universities after Buhari is seen by many as a bold move to immortalize his legacy, especially given Buhari’s long-standing ties to the northern region and his military roots.

Buhari, who passed away earlier this year, served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023, leaving behind a mixed bag of achievements and controversies—from security crackdowns and subsidy removals to economic challenges and the “Next Level” mantra.

🎓 What This Means for Students, Alumni, and the North

Rebranding UNIMAID as Muhammadu Buhari University has significant implications for current students and alumni. Many are already voicing concerns about the possible changes in school documentation, certificates, and institutional history.

Some social commentators argue that national universities should retain their original regional identity, while others say it is a deserved recognition for a two-term leader from the North.

💬 Nigerians React Online

As expected, social media platforms have exploded with hot takes:

“With insecurity still plaguing Borno, this is what we prioritize?” — @ZeeTheTruth on X

“It’s fitting. Buhari gave Nigeria 8 years of steady leadership. History will be kind.” — @ArewaPatriot

🧠 A Pattern of Renaming?

This isn’t the first time a sitting president has renamed national assets after past leaders. From Abuja Stadium renamed after Moshood Abiola to Airports renamed after key figures, Nigeria has a long tradition of using public institutions to honour political icons.
