NNPC Fires Pump Attendant Caught Cheating Customer in Lagos
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has taken swift action against a pump attendant accused of shortchanging a motorist at one of its retail stations in Ikorodu, Lagos.
The incident came to light after a viral video surfaced online, showing a man confronting the attendant over alleged under-dispensing of petrol. The footage also revealed that an individual inside the vehicle had been discreetly monitoring the transaction — ultimately catching the attendant in the act. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
NNPC Acts on Investigation Findings
In a statement released on Friday, August 8, 2025, NNPC Retail Limited confirmed that a thorough investigation traced the incident to its Ikorodu outlet. The company described the misconduct as “unacceptable” and a breach of its values of integrity, transparency, and service excellence.
Following the probe, the implicated pump attendant was dismissed, the station manager suspended, and the dealer operating the outlet issued a formal warning.
“The attention of NNPC Retail Limited has been drawn to a video circulating on social media depicting a pump attendant attempting to swindle a customer. The company does not condone such acts and will continue to enforce strict operational standards,” the statement read.
Public Vigilance Pays Off
The NNPC praised members of the public for staying alert and encouraged Nigerians to continue reporting malpractice through its customer service channels.
For Lagos motorists, this case serves as a reminder to always check the fuel meter reading before and after filling, and where possible, monitor attendants closely to ensure the quantity matches the amount paid.
Fuel Station Fraud — A Persistent Problem
Incidents of fuel station fraud are not new in Nigeria. Some common tricks include:
-
Failing to reset the pump before starting a sale
-
Distracting customers while dispensing
-
Under-dispensing fuel quantities
-
Tampering with pump calibration
These practices not only exploit consumers but also erode public trust in service stations.
NNPC’s Zero-Tolerance Stance
With fuel prices and living costs already high, NNPC’s decision to publicly sanction offenders sends a strong message — fraud will not be tolerated, and customer protection remains a priority.
As the video continues to make the rounds online, it’s a win for social media-driven accountability, and a reminder that transparency starts with awareness.
