Lagos Police Explain Suspension of Probe Into Pastor Chris Okafor Allegations

The Lagos State Police Command has explained its decision to temporarily suspend the investigation into allegations of sexual assault, rape, and related offences levelled against Pastor Chris Okafor, founder of the Mountain of Liberation and Miracle Ministry. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The clarification comes amid growing public concern following earlier confirmation by the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, that the cleric had been invited for questioning over multiple petitions filed against him.

According to the police, the investigation was paused to avoid duplication, as the case has now been transferred to a higher police formation for further action.

Speaking on the matter, the command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, represented by Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed that the Lagos Command halted its probe after discovering that the matter was already under investigation by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2, Sylvester Alabi, under the supervision of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

Adebisi explained that the Lagos Command could not conduct a parallel investigation while Zone 2 was handling the petitions.

“There has not been further investigation from the command. When he was invited, we discovered that there were similar petitions already being investigated at Zone 2. The Commissioner of Police then directed us to halt our investigation,” she said.

She added that the probe would be reopened after the Zone 2 Command concludes its work.

The police spokesperson further revealed that efforts to advance the investigation were hindered because the complainants invited by the Lagos Command failed to appear.

“All the complainants we have been calling have refused to show up. For now, we are not pressing further. We are waiting for the outcome from Zone 2, and then we will determine the next line of action,” Adebisi stated.

She confirmed that Pastor Okafor was released on self-recognition and directed to report to Zone 2 for continued investigation.

The controversy surrounding Pastor Okafor began in December 2025 after Nollywood actress Doris Ogala publicly accused him of reneging on a promise of marriage, claiming the alleged betrayal caused her emotional and psychological distress.

As the accusations gained traction, additional claims emerged on social media, prompting widespread public debate.

In response, Pastor Okafor issued a public apology to Ogala and other women he said he had wronged, while also accusing his ex-wife, Bessem, of adultery. Bessem denied the allegation and countered with claims of physical abuse during their marriage.

Amid the escalating controversy, the cleric announced he would step aside from ministerial duties for one month, pending the outcome of investigations.

As of the time of filing this report, investigations by the Zone 2 Police Command remain ongoing.
