LAWMA Issues Stern Warning Over Attacks on Enforcement Officers in Lagos
The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has issued a strong warning to members of the public against attacking, harassing or obstructing its enforcement officers while they carry out their lawful duties across the state.
The Authority expressed concern over recent incidents in which some enforcement personnel were reportedly threatened or assaulted during the enforcement of environmental sanitation laws, describing such actions as unacceptable and a direct threat to public order and environmental governance in Lagos. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
Speaking on the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Mr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the agency’s enforcement officers were deployed to protect public health, ensure compliance with waste management regulations and maintain a clean and safe environment.
Gbadegesin warned that any form of violence, intimidation or obstruction directed at LAWMA officials would attract decisive legal consequences.
According to him, LAWMA’s enforcement activities are firmly backed by the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017, which empowers the Authority to address environmental infractions and provides legal protection for officers while on duty.
He added that individuals or groups found attacking enforcement officers or disrupting lawful operations would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The LAWMA boss urged residents to cooperate with the Authority’s officials, comply with approved waste disposal guidelines and report environmental violations through established channels rather than resorting to confrontation or self-help.
He also appealed to community leaders, market associations and transport unions to support LAWMA’s efforts by encouraging compliance and promoting environmental responsibility within their communities.
Gbadegesin reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to firm but fair enforcement, sustained public engagement and the protection of its personnel.
“LAWMA remains resolute in its mandate to deliver a cleaner, healthier and more liveable city for all residents,” he said.
