“I’m a 46-Year-Old Yoruba Woman and I’ve Never Been Married” – Lady Explains Why She Chose to Stay Single

A 46-year-old Nigerian woman has sparked conversations online after revealing why she has never been married and why she has no regrets about her decision.

The woman, who identified herself as Yoruba, shared her thoughts in a viral video where she explained that marriage had never been a personal goal despite societal expectations.

According to her, she has never been engaged, planned a wedding or imagined herself walking down the aisle.

“I’m 46 years old, Nigerian, Yoruba. I have never been married before, I have never been engaged. I’ve never looked at wedding pictures, I’ve never looked at wedding dresses, I’ve never looked at venues, I’ve never even come close to it,” she said. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Marriage Was Never My Priority

The woman stated that her decision to remain single was not due to a lack of attention from men or failed relationships.

She explained that she had been in serious relationships in the past, including one that lasted up to five years, but marriage was never something she desired.

“Before you say maybe because no man likes you, I have been in relationships—two years, and I think the longest was like four or five years. But baby, never ever, it’s not, never been a priority for me. I just don’t want this,” she said.

Childhood Experiences Shaped My Perspective

Reflecting on her upbringing, she disclosed that she was raised in what many Nigerians would consider a stable home.

According to her, both of her parents remained together until her mother’s death, and she grew up in a professional and relatively comfortable environment.

However, she said her observations of marriages around her gradually influenced her opinion on the institution.

Looking at Marriage Through Data and Experience

The woman, who described herself as a data analyst currently studying data engineering and artificial intelligence, said she tends to analyse life choices based on history and observable patterns.

“One thing I understand is that when you want to predict the future, you collect data and you go by history,” she explained.

She added that the experiences of women around her, including her grandmothers, mother and other married women she has known, contributed to her views.

“You go by the history of marriages in our communities, the current marriages in our communities, everything I’ve seen growing up, the way our grandfathers treated our grandmothers, the way our fathers treated our mothers, the way our mothers endured and suffered,” she said.

According to her, those experiences led her to conclude at an early age that marriage was not a path she wanted to follow.

Fear of Unhappiness

The woman further revealed that her greatest fear is being trapped in an unhappy marriage.

She stated that she would rather face life’s challenges alone than remain in a relationship that leaves her miserable.

“My biggest fear in life is to be stuck with someone and be miserable with him. I’d rather be miserable by myself,” she said.

She added that she has yet to encounter a marriage she personally admires enough to make her reconsider her stance.

Mixed Reactions Online

Her comments have since generated mixed reactions on social media.

While some users applauded her for making a personal decision and refusing to bow to societal pressure, others argued that her experiences and observations may not accurately reflect every marriage.

Several commenters pointed out that healthy and successful marriages do exist, while others agreed that individuals should have the freedom to choose the lifestyle that best suits them.

The viral video has once again sparked conversations about marriage, societal expectations and the growing number of Nigerians choosing unconventional life paths based on their personal experiences and beliefs.
