Born Obus Okukubor Steven, but widely known as BLS_Brokeless among music circles, in this interview with Deji Obasa and Andrew Efoghe, GODSPOWERPROJECT digs into the roots of the Merica artist, uncovering an artistic process, and his journey to joining the new generation Afrobeats league, especially after the success of his “Wonderful” EP and “Dollar Sign” project
GODSPOWERPROJECT: Kindly give us an insight into your Background
BLS_Brokeless: I was brought up in Ojo Lagos by my Aunty. It wasn’t easy, she was a widow with six-children as at then, yet she took me in with my three siblings. She was a market trader, selling palm kernel (banga) at Alaba Ojo Lagos. Her first son, Kingsley Ejoor, a Navy Officer was assisting with our school fees.
I started hawking in my early teens, selling pure water, plantains, and went on to work in companies such as Coca Cola, among other means, just to survive and assist to reduce the burden on my Aunty’s shoulders.
It made me brave, as well gave me strength for life ahead.
At some point I was depressed and had negative thoughts whenever I remembered that I had no one at such a young age. I was pained and hurt when I saw other kids who had what I lacked.
Shaping my life through all these struggles gave me purpose and motivation concerning life and everything in it.
Even with all these memories, all I want to do is use my joyous sounds to reveal hope and heal the broken
