Emotional Moment as Man Wrongly Jailed for 25 Years Over Generator Case Reunites With His Mother

An emotional scene has gripped social media after a man wrongly imprisoned for 25 years over a generator theft case was seen reuniting with his elderly mother, who held him in disbelief after decades of separation. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The man, whose identity remains undisclosed for privacy, was among a group of individuals accused in 1999 of stealing a generator. Although the actual thief was reportedly released in 2016, the innocent men — including a driver and a generator repairman — remained behind bars, forgotten by the justice system.

25 Years in Prison Without Conviction

According to reports, the man was held as an awaiting trial inmate at Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison from 1999 to 2024. Despite never being convicted, he spent over two decades in detention due to the slow pace and neglect of Nigeria’s judicial process.

In a twist of irony, the actual thief whose actions led to the arrest of the trio was eventually released years ago, while the others were left to languish in prison without trial.

Governor Alex Otti Intervenes

Justice finally began to prevail when Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, intervened in the case. According to sources, the governor facilitated the release of the wrongly detained inmates, helping them regain their freedom after 25 painful years.

The story has ignited calls for urgent judicial reform, as many believe countless others may still be trapped in prisons across Nigeria for years without fair trial.

A Mother’s Unbreakable Hope

In a heart-wrenching viral video, the newly freed man is seen embracing his aged mother outside the prison gates. The mother, overwhelmed with emotion, clung tightly to her son — a reunion 25 years in the making.

“She held him in disbelief, as if time stood still,” one eyewitness remarked.
