Former Nigerian Senator Ibrahim Musa Passes Away After Prolonged Illness
Nigeria has lost another prominent political figure, as former Senator Ibrahim Musa, who represented Niger North Senatorial District from 2011 to 2015, has been confirmed dead. The respected lawmaker reportedly died in an Abuja hospital after battling a prolonged illness.
Senator Musa was a seasoned legal practitioner and a well-known politician in Niger State, where he made significant contributions to both his local constituency and the nation at large during his time in office. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
Political Journey and Senate Tenure
Senator Ibrahim Musa was elected to the Nigerian Senate in 2011 on the platform of the now-defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC), a party that later merged to form the All Progressives Congress (APC). In the election, he secured 131,872 votes, defeating the then-incumbent senator, Nuhu Aliyu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 83,778 votes.
However, Musa’s victory was not without controversy. The defeated Senator Aliyu, who served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, challenged the election results at the Niger State Election Petition Tribunal.
During the legal tussle, Musa was arrested in July 2011 over allegations of submitting forged documents to the tribunal. He was detained for four days. Upon his release in September 2011, the senator maintained his innocence, describing the ordeal as a moment of growth in his political career.
Despite the turbulence, Musa remained committed to his legislative duties until the end of his term in 2015, where he actively contributed to debates and policy formation in the upper chamber.
Tributes Pour In From Niger State Government
Reacting to the news of his passing, Niger State Governor Umar Bago expressed deep sorrow. In a condolence message released on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor described Musa’s death as “heartbreaking.”
He extended heartfelt condolences to the Emir of Kontagora, Muhammad Mu’azu II, the people of the Kontagora Emirate, and the family of the late senator. Governor Bago noted that the former lawmaker was a pillar of development in the state and played a vital role in national politics during his tenure.
“Senator Musa’s contributions at the National Assembly helped shape the development of not just Niger North, but also the state and the country at large,” the governor said.
He urged the deceased’s family to accept the loss as the will of Allah and encouraged them to stay strong in faith during this difficult time.
The governor also offered prayers for the repose of Senator Musa’s soul, asking Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah Firdausi, the highest level of paradise in Islam.
