Lagos State Reopens Purple Mall After Tragic Parking Lot Death of 28-Year-Old Man
The Lagos State Government has officially reopened Purple Mall, located along Freedom Way, Lekki Phase 1, for business operations after a tragic incident in which a 28-year-old man lost his life at the facility’s parking lot. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
According to the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the decision to unseal the mall followed an administrative investigation by the state. Wahab, alongside senior officials, conducted a physical inspection of the premises before issuing the reopening directive.
In a statement by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kunle Adeshina, the Commissioner emphasized that all relevant documents were reviewed immediately after the tragedy.
“We called for all supporting documents and investigation after the incident. In fairness, due diligence was observed, and the necessary paperwork was in place. The mall cannot remain sealed indefinitely while the police continue with their separate investigation,” Wahab stated.
The fatal event occurred when the victim’s vehicle reportedly fell from the 5th floor of the mall’s multi-storey parking facility. The incident prompted swift government action, including the temporary closure of the premises for safety compliance checks and environmental assessments.
Wahab described the death as “deeply unfortunate”, and reiterated the state’s commitment to public safety and structural integrity in commercial spaces.
“Our closure was to allow for a specialised investigation into building safety compliance. We are satisfied with the outcome of our administrative review. What remains ongoing is the criminal investigation by the Police, which is beyond our control,” he noted.
The mall has since resumed operations, but the tragic loss has reignited conversations around building regulations, parking lot safety, and the responsibilities of facility managers in Lagos.
