“Reverse Your Harsh Visa Policy Against Nigerians” – FG Tells US Government

The Federal Government of Nigeria has publicly criticized the United States for implementing a more restrictive visa policy targeting Nigerian citizens. In a strongly worded statement issued Wednesday, the FG urged Washington to reverse its new three-month single-entry limit on key non-immigrant visas, warning that the policy could strain bilateral ties and hurt thousands of law-abiding Nigerians. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

❗ What Changed?

Under the revised visa reciprocity schedule, the U.S. now limits the following visa types for Nigerians to three months with single entry only:

  • B1/B2 visas (Business and Tourism)

  • F visas (Students)

  • J visas (Exchange visitors)

Previously, many of these visas had longer validity periods and multiple entry options.

🇳🇬 FG: Decision Violates Spirit of Partnership

Speaking through Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian government expressed disappointment and concern over the U.S. move.

“The Federal Government views this development with concern and keen interest, particularly given the longstanding cordial relations and strong people-to-people ties between our two countries.”

The Ministry noted that such a drastic change appears inconsistent with the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect that typically govern international relations—especially between longstanding partners.

🎓 Impact on Nigerians: Education, Family & Business at Risk

The new policy is expected to negatively impact:

  • Students seeking to pursue higher education in U.S. institutions

  • Professionals and business travelers involved in legitimate transnational commerce

  • Families with relatives abroad who now face greater uncertainty and cost in reuniting

Ebienfa emphasized that while the U.S. has the right to set immigration rules, Nigeria expects fairness and collaboration, not policies that appear one-sided.

“Nigeria respectfully urges the United States to reconsider this decision in the spirit of partnership, cooperation, and shared global responsibilities.”

🕊️ Diplomatic Channels Still Open

In the face of growing backlash and public concern, the Nigerian government revealed that diplomatic talks are underway to address the situation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to finding a resolution that reflects the mutual interests of both nations.

“Diplomatic engagements are ongoing, and the Ministry remains committed to pursuing a resolution that reflects fairness and upholds the values of mutual interest.”

💬 Public Reaction

Nigerian students, business owners, and families affected by the decision have voiced frustration, citing increased financial and emotional stress. Many feel the policy could create unnecessary barriers for those with good intentions and valid purposes.
