Tragedy as Teenager Dies After Backflip Celebration for “New Life” in Australia

What was meant to be the beginning of a new chapter turned into an unimaginable tragedy for 18-year-old Sonny Blundell, who tragically died after performing a backflip to celebrate his recent move to Australia’s Gold Coast.  Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The teenager had just relocated from New South Wales to Southport, Queensland, with his girlfriend, excited to begin what he described as a “new life.”

According to Australian media, Sonny was found unresponsive in the living room by his best friend, Mitchell Bullard, on June 24, 2025, just hours after attempting the backflip. He had reportedly hit his head during the stunt but didn’t think much of it at the time.

From Celebration to Coma: What Happened

Sonny’s sister, Izabella Cromack-Hay, shared that her brother had FaceTimed her the day of the incident, thrilled about his move and celebrating with friends on the beach.

“He was so proud of the move. He worked hard in concreting and was making a name for himself,” she told The Daily Telegraph.

After hitting his head, Sonny reportedly went to bed with a headache. The next morning, he vomited and passed out in the bathroom. Mitchell, who was with him, found him unconscious and immediately called for help.

He was rushed to the hospital and placed in a medically induced coma as doctors battled to save him. He suffered multiple strokes and a brain bleed, which required emergency surgery and a brain drain.

Despite the best efforts of medical staff, Sonny passed away on June 30, less than a week after the accident.

Family in Grief: “We Are in Disbelief and Major Pain”

A devastated Izabella confirmed the heartbreaking news via a GoFundMe page set up to help the family cover funeral costs and transport Sonny’s body back home.

“Our beautiful Sonny has grown his wings,” she wrote.
“We are all in disbelief and major pain. We ask for support to bring him home. His sisters are waiting for him.”

She added that the family, still in Queensland, is struggling to process the loss and make arrangements during what she described as a “horrible time.”

Public Mourning and Support

The story has triggered an outpouring of support across social media and fundraising platforms. Many have shared kind words about Sonny’s hardworking nature, positive energy, and big dreams.

“He was full of life and just getting started,” one tribute read.
“Taken far too soon.”

A Heartbreaking Reminder

Sonny’s tragic passing is a sobering reminder of how quickly life can change—even in moments of joy. His death has sparked conversations about head injuries, youth safety, and the importance of seeking medical attention immediately after any trauma, no matter how minor it seems.
