Ruger Faces Backlash After Revealing He Attended Parties at Age 9 to Dance to Afrobeats
Fast-rising Nigerian singer Ruger, born Michael Adebayo Olayinka, is currently facing criticism online after a controversial revelation during a recent interview. The Bounce crooner shared that he used to sneak out as a child—before the age of 10—to attend parties just to enjoy Afrobeats and Dancehall music. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
The disclosure came during an appearance on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast hosted by renowned music journalist Joey Akan, where Ruger spoke about his early passion for music and performance.
“I was sneaking out to go to parties to listen to Afrobeats and Dancehall,” Ruger revealed.
“I was not up to 10 years old then but I knew how to dance. So I would just go to parties and shake my body.”
Social Media Reactions: “This Is Not a Flex”
While some fans applauded his early drive and dedication to music, many others expressed concern, arguing that such behavior was irresponsible—even if driven by passion.

-
@bamiflex: “We all love Ruger’s music, but this isn’t something to glamorize. Children need protection, not parties.”
-
@afrobeatplug: “Imagine the risks. It’s wild what some artists went through to chase their dreams.”
Ruger’s Musical Journey So Far
Ruger first gained major attention in 2021 with the hit single ‘Bounce’, which earned him a recording deal with Jonzing World, an affiliate of D’Prince’s Mavin Records. He soon followed up with his debut EP, Pandemic, which established him as one of the most unique voices in Afrobeats, known for his eye patch, sensual lyrics, and dancehall fusion.
In 2024, Ruger officially parted ways with Jonzing World following reports of creative differences. He has since launched his independent music label, Blown Boy Entertainment, and continues to drop chart-topping tracks.
Between Controversy and Passion
Ruger’s comments reflect the complex journey of many Nigerian artists who pursued their dreams in unconventional ways. While his hustle spirit is undeniable, the backlash reveals a growing concern about romanticizing childhood rebellion.
Whether fans agree or not, one thing remains certain—Ruger’s raw honesty keeps him in the spotlight, just like his music.
