Wizkid is a global icon, no doubt. But serious questions are being asked about the kind of artists being pushed under his influence lately—artists with no clear sound, weak identity, and little substance.
Mavo’s new song has reignited the debate. Many listeners feel it represents a worrying direction for Afrobeats: less originality, less storytelling, and more recycled vibes. If this is what the future of the genre looks like, then maybe it’s time for the industry to pause and reflect.
Afrobeats didn’t conquer the world by accident. It grew because of depth, culture, and artists who stood for something—beyond hype and co-signs.
