A viral video showing veteran Nollywood actor, Sunday Afolabi, reportedly working as a commercial bus (danfo) driver has sparked widespread concern and emotional reactions online.
The clip, which surfaced on social media, appears to show the once-celebrated actor going about his daily routine behind the wheel of a public transport vehicle, raising questions about his current circumstances. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
Sunday Afolabi rose to prominence in the 1990s with standout roles in classic Nigerian films such as Owo Blow and End of the Wofa. He became a household name for his portrayal of the character “Kegbero” in Owo Blow, earning widespread recognition during Nollywood’s early boom.
The recent footage has since ignited conversations about the welfare of veteran actors and the challenges faced by many in the entertainment industry.
While some viewers expressed sympathy, describing the situation as “heartbreaking,” others questioned the authenticity of the video, suggesting it could be staged to attract public support.
One social media user, Resume AC, wrote: “How do I feel this is all staged? Either way, it’s heartbreaking because we set high standards for people.”
Another commenter, Biola Media, noted: “This is the reality… the industry has evolved, and many must adapt to survive.”
Lily Joe expressed empathy, stating: “Oh dear, it’s not easy. So touching and sad.”
Meanwhile, another user, Blackman, offered a contrasting perspective, sparking further debate about financial stability within the industry.
The development has once again brought attention to the lack of structured support systems for aging actors in Nollywood, as well as the unpredictable nature of fame and fortune in the entertainment sector.
As reactions continue to pour in, many are calling for improved welfare initiatives to support veteran actors who once shaped Nigeria’s film industry.
