“Nigeria in Bondage Under Tinubu’s Leadership” – Obasanjo Raises Alarm

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has issued a strong critique of Nigeria’s current state under President Bola Tinubu, declaring that the country is in “bondage” due to worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and divisive governance. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Obasanjo’s Stern Warning

Speaking on Friday in Abeokuta during a meeting with leaders of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Obasanjo expressed deep concerns about Nigeria’s direction:

  • “We are in bondage. Let us keep watching the situation, but more importantly, let us pray that God delivers us.”

  • He distanced himself from partisan politics, stating: “I belong to no party. Nigeria is my political party. I only care about the country’s progress.”

Criticism of Tribal Politics

Obasanjo lamented Nigeria’s ethnic-based leadership, arguing that past presidents have largely represented their tribes rather than the entire nation:

  • “We have had Fulani, Hausa, and Yoruba presidents, but not a true Nigerian president—one for all, not just their tribe. Until we get such a leader, our problems will persist.”

Call for Vigilance & True Nationalism

The elder statesman urged Nigerians to actively engage in governance and reject complacency:

  • He warned that passivity allows unqualified, self-serving leaders to thrive.

  • Nigeria, he stressed, desperately needs a unifying, nationalistic leader to rescue it from its current crises.

Political Implications

Obasanjo’s remarks come as opposition groups, including the NNPP, strategize ahead of the 2027 elections. His comments may fuel further debate on Tinubu’s leadership and Nigeria’s deepening challenges.
