NLC Threatens Nationwide Protest Over Soaring Poverty, Insecurity, and Workers’ Rights Violations
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, threatening to mobilize a mass national protest over the country’s worsening economic hardship, rising insecurity, and increasing violations of workers’ rights. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
The declaration was made following the NLC’s Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting, held at the 12th June Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State over the weekend.
In a strongly worded communiqué, the NLC expressed deep frustration over what it described as an intolerable cost-of-living crisis and the continuous disregard for the plight of ordinary Nigerians.
“The level of hardship and insecurity in the country has become unbearable. Nigerian workers will not fold their arms while the economy and democratic values are systematically destroyed,” the Congress stated.
Demand for Urgent Government Action
The labour union emphasized that without swift and decisive action from the government, the country risks slipping into complete social and economic collapse. It called for immediate steps to:
-
Address skyrocketing inflation and food prices
-
Tackle widespread insecurity
-
Protect workers’ rights and welfare
-
Restore confidence in democratic governance
The NLC also hinted at consultations with affiliate unions and civil society organizations in preparation for a massive national action that could paralyze key sectors of the economy if the government fails to respond.
More Details to Follow
As tensions rise across the country amid persistent economic challenges, Nigerians are anxiously waiting to see whether the Federal Government will respond to the NLC’s warnings or risk facing one of the largest organized protests in recent years.
