Akran of Badagry, Oba Menu-Toyi, Dies at 89 as Sanwo-Olu Mourns

Badagry, Lagos State — The Akran of Badagry Kingdom, Oba De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, has passed away at the age of 89, bringing to an end his nearly five decades of reign over one of Lagos State’s most historic communities. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The respected traditional ruler reportedly died after a brief illness. His passing marks the conclusion of a 49-year reign, during which he played a prominent role in traditional leadership and cultural preservation in Lagos State.

Oba Menu-Toyi, who ascended the throne on April 23, 1977, was a senior member and Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, a position he held until his death. He was widely regarded as a stabilising figure in Badagry and a strong advocate for unity, heritage, and community development.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described the monarch’s death as a profound loss to Badagry, Lagos State, and Nigeria at large.

In a condolence message released on behalf of the state government, the governor commiserated with the people of Badagry, the royal family, and traditional institutions.

“On behalf of my wife, the government and people of Lagos State, I sympathise with the people of Badagry, the family and associates of the late Oba Babatunde Akran, Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I. His transition is a great loss to the ancient town of Badagry and Lagos State as a whole,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor praised the late monarch for his commitment to peace, cultural heritage, and development, noting that his reign contributed significantly to the promotion of tourism, unity, and traditional values in Badagry.

Throughout his reign, Oba Menu-Toyi was known for fostering harmony among diverse interests in Badagry and for using his royal influence to attract growth and development to the historic coastal town.

Governor Sanwo-Olu urged residents of Badagry and members of the royal family to uphold the late monarch’s legacy of wisdom, leadership, and service, while praying for strength to bear the loss.

Burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the royal family in line with Badagry traditional rites.
