The mother of popular Nigerian singer Mayorkun has shared the inspiring story of how a cover song posted on social media changed her son’s life and paved the way for his successful music career.
Speaking during an interview on the Talk with B podcast, she revealed that the family had no idea that Mayorkun would become a star after he recorded and uploaded a cover of Davido’s song online. Eyes Of Lagos reports,
According to her, the singer had visited his cousin’s house in Lekki when he decided to enter the music room and record the cover.
“There is nothing God cannot do. We weren’t expecting it. He just left for his cousin’s place at Lekki, and when he got there, he went to the music room and was playing Davido’s song and posted it on the internet,” she said.
She explained that the video quickly gained attention on social media and eventually caught Davido’s attention.
“Before you know it, it went viral. He did a cover for ‘Money’ and posted it on Instagram, and it got to Davido,” she added.
The proud mother disclosed that the family was initially doubtful when Davido contacted Mayorkun, suspecting it might be a scam.
However, Mayorkun’s brother, Ayobami, convinced them that the message was genuine.
“At first, they were like, ‘Is it him or not?’ But the moment they recognised his voice, they jumped in excitement. Davido told him he liked the song and asked for his measurements. Before we knew it, he sent him a whole box of gifts,” she recounted.
She further revealed that Davido later invited Mayorkun to work with him in the studio, a collaboration that eventually produced the hit single Eleko.
The song went on to become a massive success and served as Mayorkun’s breakthrough record, launching him into mainstream fame.
According to her, the impact of the song was immediate, transforming Mayorkun’s life and bringing joy to the entire family.
She also recalled how residents of their neighbourhood in Ajah celebrated the singer’s success and affectionately nicknamed them “Oriyami Eleko” in reference to the hit song.
The heartwarming story has since generated reactions online, with many Nigerians praising Davido for supporting emerging talents and giving young artists opportunities to shine.
Others described Mayorkun’s journey as proof that talent, persistence and the right opportunity can change a person’s life overnight.
