“It’s More Rampant Than We Think” — Lawyer Raises Alarm Over Paternity Fraud

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has raised serious concerns about the growing prevalence of paternity fraud, warning that the issue is far more widespread than many Nigerians realise.

Taking to social media, Effiong disclosed that he recently handled two separate cases involving paternity fraud and marital infidelity within the space of one week, noting that one of the matters has already been presented in open court. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

According to the lawyer, the cases were emotionally distressing, as one of his clients reportedly broke down in tears while testifying about being deceived by his wife over the true paternity of a child he had believed was his.

Effiong revealed that what made the situation more troubling was the alleged lack of remorse shown by the woman involved, who reportedly blamed her husband for the deception rather than accepting responsibility.

He added that another male victim in a similar case also became emotionally overwhelmed while recounting his experience, highlighting the psychological impact paternity fraud can have on affected families.

The lawyer further emphasized the critical role of DNA testing, describing it as a vital tool that has helped uncover truths that might otherwise remain hidden for years.

Drawing from his experience representing both men and women in matrimonial disputes, Effiong warned that paternity fraud is more common than society is willing to admit, urging couples to embrace honesty, accountability, and transparency in relationships.

His comments have since sparked widespread discussions online, with many Nigerians calling for increased awareness around paternity issues and the emotional consequences of marital deception.
